In the modern business landscape most if not every business owner is always looking to create value, awareness and maximize overall efficiency. Whilst technology continues to expand, organisations on many levels are searching for a range of innovative products or services, to better manage their web hosting and other cloud requirements. Cloud hosting has indeed now reached a point based on it’s advantages where all business owners should consider using. Most companies and large entities including governments are all migrating to cloud based solutions. What does it mean to move to the cloud? How does cloud hosting work and why is it better than standard hosting?

What is Cloud Hosting?

Defined in basic terms, the cloud is an electronic structure and or framework, with the capacity and ability to store data and maintain layers of data, across multiple hardware devices. This data is then accessed and transmitted up through several types of networks, including the internet. Essentially, cloud servers will combine functions such as data storage, data processing and allocating disk space to enable websites to spread out across a cluster of servers. This in essence means that if one server goes down, back up servers are enacted to ensure that no information, capacity or data disappears. Furthermore, this also creates another layer of protection to which data, software, scripts, applications and email are accessible anywhere on the globe and at all times.

Server Uptime/Downtime

A website’s performance is always and most importantly reliant to the actual server uptime. The cloud system of linked and connected servers ensures there is no single point of failure. If at any point a server is down or cannot process or validate a request, subsequent servers aligned to the network of clusters override and maintain the hosting operation, by default. With traditional hosting services, however, downtime or failure on your single server will result in a period of downtime and potentially other issues, for your applications or website.

Low Costs & Better Efficiency

The best advantage about cloud hosting as a service is, you never have to expend capital on a range of elements including and supporting the infrastructure, as all cloud providers will maintain and pay for this element. Additionally, you only need to pay for the services, resources and data usage that your business or application is actually using. In standard hosting models and services, you do need to invest in infrastructure and also pay a fixed amount for services and resources regardless of whether you use them, or not

Higher Grade Security

Again in the standard hosting model or services, generally resources, software, hardware and indeed capacity on a single server can be shared among multiple websites. Additionally, you need a private dedicated server to secure sensitive information which is far more costly. Cloud hosting, comes with an established infrastructure with multiple layers of security, structured data silos, network efficiency, security software and a range of other complimentary resources and tools. Cloud service providers also allocate secure and encrypted solutions, backup recovery mechanisms, high grade firewalls, identity management access, data archive and secure storage segregation.

Backup & Disaster Recovery

The cloud hosting multi-server setup also facilitates file archiving for website or application data by automatically backing up periodically and frequently. This ensure that files always remain relevant and for quick and seamless disaster recovery systems. In the standard server setup of traditional hosting, disaster recovery is not as feasible or structured as there is only one server that hosts your data and applications. For disaster recovery, you need to make special arrangements with the provider for backup, or indeed have offsite files available at all times.

Modern Technology & Software

Cloud hosting has the ability to take advantage of all the latest technologies, trends, methods and product demands. You can automatically integrate, sync or customise your software applications based on your business needs, capacity, requirements, timings and preferences. This includes software versions, server upgrades, data capacity, system configuration, processing power and much more. The standard hosting services is limited and does not allow you to automatically customise or upgrade, your server landscape.
